Eltingville has had many names throughout its history. Its present name was given for a prominent family named Elting which called the neighborhood home in the late 1800’s. Eltingville was once the last stop on the Staten Island Railway until the 1860’s. Scandinavians settled in Eltingville during the 19th century. At that time there were so many families with the same surname that families were differentiated by trade or by nicknames. The Eltingville Lutheran Church remains in the neighborhood as a reminder of those times.
The opening of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge brought many new homes and the migration of Italians into the neighborhood. Schools in Eltingville include PS 42 and Eltingville Lutheran School.
